How does a BCH DOL Starter operate?
A DOL Starter consists of two major components that control the current inflow.
- Contactor: It is the first point of contact with the electricity. It's a control device that creates or breaks contact with the load. The electromagnet in the contactor is responsible for establishing the electrical connection when it is energized. Commonly,these contactors are designed to carry a higher current than the actual supply.
- Overload Relay: It is a protection device and designed to protect the motor from overloads, short circuits, and other faults. It is a thermal device that monitors the current flowing through the circuit and trips if the current exceeds its rating. It also provides protection from phase loss, phase imbalance, phase reversal, and overheating. Overload relays are necessary for motors to operate normally and without the damages caused when the current exceeds their determined value.
- The Push Buttons: There are two push buttons on the DOL Starter – NO (Normally Open) and NC (Normally Closed) buttons
- NO button is used to establish contact with the power and let the current flow through the contactor. It is normally turned off and makes no contact with the circuit. When pushed, it switches to ON, creating a contact in the electrical circuit.
- NC button is used to disconnect the electrical circuit and stop the flow of the current. It is usually in contact with the circuit, but when pushed, it disconnects from the circuit, breaking the electric flow.
The whole assembly is lined up in such a way as to facilitate the current through the circuit, monitor the flow and cut-off the circuit in case of abnormalities.
- When the NO button is pressed, it establishes the contact with the contactor. Once the load is transferred to the contactor, the electromagnets get energized, attracting the contacts and closing the circuit. Thus, power freely flows through the circuit and drives the motor.
- The auxiliary contacts control the overload relays and prevent the motor from overheating and overloading. When the current exceeds the set value, or in case of fluctuations or faults, the overload relay trips. As a result, auxiliary contact is made to open and de-energize the contactor.
- To stop the motor, the NC button is pressed which de-energises the electromagnet and opens the circuit in the contactor. Thus, disconnecting the motor from the power supply. The overload relay also trips, isolating the motor from the supply.
